A mantra is sacred words, a numinous sound, a syllable,  a word or group of words in Sanskrit. Mantra is a motivating chant-like "I Think I can" "I Think I Can" Various mantras are either spoken aloud or chants internally in one's thoughts. 

You know, there is a total of 108 Mantras in Hinduism. The most punctual mantras took birth in India more than 3,000 years back and were created in Vedic Sanskrit. More About Mahamrityunjay Jaap and What is the Mythology Behind Mantra:

According to the prevailing mythology, The life span of Markandey, the son of sage Mrikandu, was only 16 years. When Markandey found out about his fate, he started worshiping Shiva in front of Shivling. When Yamraj came to pick up Markandey, he wrapped his arms around the Shivling and begged for mercy. Yama forcibly tried to separate Markandeya from the Shivling, which angered Lord Shiva and sentenced Yama to death. Lord Shiva revived Yama on the condition that this child should live forever. This is how Mahamrityunjay Mantra originated.

Lord Shiva is the most worship deity of the Hindu religion. While there are so many ways to worship Lord Shiva, different Shiva Pujas are listed in the Puranas. Still, Chanting Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is considered the most powerful way to gratify (please) Lord Shiva Power. 

In all other mantras, Mahamrityunjay Jaap is the most powerful mantra. It is also called Tryambakam Mantra or Rudra Mantra. Tryambaka means "Three-eyed One," and Rudra means who is identified with Lord Shiva in Shaivism. Mahamrityunjaya is the mantra to please Lord Shiva. It is believed if we chant this mantra, it will protect a person from premature death. Due to the mantra Jaap, a person is saved by going in the mouth of death; a dying patient also gets life with the grace of Mahakal Shiva. There is a law to chant one and a quarter million Mahamrityunjaya Mantra to remove from the effects of illness, accident, evil planets, avoid death, and increase lifespan.

Meaning of Mahamrityunjay Jaap Mantra:

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is mentioned in Rig Veda to Yajurveda. Mantra is dedicated to Lord Shiva for a person to be blessed with good health and wealth and free from all kinds of problems.

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra:

"ऊँ त्र्यंबकम् यजामहे सुगंधीम् पुष्टी वर्धनम्।

 उर्व्वावरूक मिवबंधनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षी यमामृतात्।।"

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra Meaning in Hindi: 

त्रयंबकम- त्रि.नेत्रों वाला ;कर्मकारक।

यजामहे- हम पूजते हैं, सम्मान करते हैं। हमारे श्रद्देय।

सुगंधिम- मीठी महक वाला, सुगंधित।

पुष्टि- एक सुपोषित स्थिति, फलने वाला व्यक्ति। जीवन की परिपूर्णता।

वर्धनम- वह जो पोषण करता है, शक्ति देता है।

उर्वारुक- ककड़ी।

इवत्र- जैसे, इस तरह।

बंधनात्र- वास्तव में समाप्ति से अधिक लंबी है।

मृत्यु- मृत्यु से।

मुक्षिया- हमें स्वतंत्र करें, मुक्ति दें।

मात्र न अमृतात- अमरता, मोक्ष।

Meaning of Mahamrityunjay Mantra in English: 

We worship Lord Shiva, the three-eyed Lord, one who nourishes all beings. May Lord Shiva saves us from death, which spreads the fragrance throughout the world, can attain salvation.

How to Do Mahamrityunjay Mantra Jaap:

One of the most powerful mantras that you can chant is Shivaji Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. It is prescribed that chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra 108 times. It will more effective if you chant this mantra early morning at 4 am. 

Many people chant this mantra using the Rudraksha rosary, which has 108 beads that are used to count the number of chants. The number 108 has a specific meaning; 1 means "oneness," 0 means "nothing," and eight means "everything." A person can gain maximum benefit from chanting this mantra if he /she repeats it 108 times. 

You should chants this mantra a quarter of a million times. If you are going to start chanting this mantra, then it should start from Monday. It is beneficial to use the rosary of Rudraksha in chanting this mantra. Keep in mind that does not chant this mantra after 12 noon.

While chanting the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, the utterance should not come out of the lips. If you do not practice doing this, then chant it in a slow tone. Do the chanting always by facing towards the east. Apart from this, also keep in mind that chanting this mantra at a fixed place only.

It is said that Lord Shiva will be pleased with the person and get salvation. His death will not be painful.
