Krishna Janmashtami Story (Katha)

Krishna Janmashtami is the festival to commemorate the birthday of Lord Shri Krishna, who is the avatar of Lord Vishnu. He is believed to have come into the world approximately 5000 years ago, in Mathura in the 'Dwapar Yuga'.

Krishna Janmashtami is also known as Ashtami Rohini, Srikrishna Jayanti, Krishnashtami, Saatam Aatham, Gokulashtami, and sometimes simply as Janmashtami. It is, in essence, a Hindu celebration.

The festival is usually celebrated on Ashtami Tithi, the 8th day in the Dark Half, or Krishna Paksha, the name given to the month Bhadrapada according to the Hindu calendar, which is the month when you can see that Rohini Nakshatra is in the ascendency. According to the Gregorian calendar, it is typically during both August and September.

The celebration is celebrated with enthusiasm and energy by Hindus across India and worldwide. The people observe a fast throughout the day, sing songs, and offer prayers at midnight to celebrate the birth of the Lord. Ras Lila, dramatic reenactments of Krishna's life is a unique feature performed throughout the country as they recreate the flirtatious facets of Krishna's youth.

Another fascinating part of the Krishna Janmashtami is Dahi-Handi, a game played in the temples. This game depicts the playful and fun aspect of Krishna, where teams of young men make human pyramids to climb an overhanging butter pot and then break it.

The Story of Lord Krishna's Birth

Lord Krishna was the son of Devaki and Vasudeva and was the eighth personification of God Vishnu; Lord Krishna was part of the Yadava community of Mathura, Kansa was a king of Mathura and a brother of Devaki. One time, he heard the voice of the sky saying that Devaki's eighth child would be the one to kill him. After hearing the voice from the sky, she was imprisoned by her sisters Devaki and Vasudeva in prison. King Kansa executed six kids of Devaki, and the seventh was miscarried.

The eighth child of Devaki is Lord Krishna. Lord Vishnu instructed Vasudeva to bring the newborn Lord Krishna to Gokul in the home, Yashoda and Nanda's home, to ensure his safety. At the moment of his birth, all personnel in the jail were able to sleep throughout the night.

Then Vasudeva calmly took the baby Krishna to Yashoda's home and later took her newly born daughter to prison. King Kansa executed the young girl because he believed she was the eighteenth child from Devaki; however, the girl was Yogmaya. An assistant for Lord Vishnu. She flew up and informed King Kansa about his death, and then vanished.

Lord Krishna was charming and also intelligent since childhood. Lord Krishna and Balram, his elder brother Balram lived in Gokul village. They later murdered Kansa, the King. Kansa during the battle of Mathura.

Janmashtami Rituals

In India, the birthday of Lord Krishna is celebrated at around midnight. The devotees decorate the temple and idol of Lord Krishna with fresh flowers on the day of the festival. The devotees dress in unique costumes to honor Lord Krishna during Janmashtami. They also offer him sweets and fruits. Specially designed swings are made for the baby Lord Krishna in certain temples.

Many people fast or consume fruit and then spend the entire day singing to praise Lord Krishna. The temples in Gokul and Mathura are of particular significance on Krishna Janmashtami day, so devotees crowd the temples during the celebration days. Followers of Lord Krishna are also dancing and exchanging gifts to celebrate joy on the occasion of the birthday of the Lord.

On the most auspicious date of Janmashtami, the infant's idol Krishna is bathed in the midnight sun and placed in the form of a cranny. The idol is then decorated with jewelry, flowers, and a tiny "mukut" which is a crown. It is then put in the cradle. Everyone then swings the cradle to the tune of Bhajans or praise songs.

The atmosphere is full of joy and excitement when everyone celebrates the birth of Vishnu's avatar, who was born to provide security to the human race that is suffering. In the end, "Naivedya" is presented to God and given to everyone.

The Naivedya or Prasad is a combination of rice puffed and curds, milk, and sugar. Furthermore, many dairy products, particularly butter, which was Sri Krishna's favorite food in his childhood, are offered. Many kinds of fruits are also given to God.

Many Indian sweets are prepared during this time of celebration. There is Laddus, Payasam or Kheer, Shrikhand, and so on. Precisely at midnight, the birth of Krishna is announced by ringing bells and blowing conch shells.

Many women observe a fast all day long and eat meals only after the birth of Krishna. At temples, "Bhajans" – the recitation of hymns of worship, along with "Kirtans" are religious sermons that begin in the early evening and continue until midnight, the time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Music and singing continue all night.

In homes, people can tie the mango leaves on doors to commemorate the occasion as auspicious. Beautiful "Rangolis " is painted in front of the house. Inside the house, a tiny mandap made of wood is constructed and decorated with flowering plants and leaves.
